Proposal

I have chosen the theme Health and Medicine. The reason I chose this theme is because I have a personal interest in it. When I applied this semester at BCC I had a goal to eventually apply to the nursing program. For my memoir of my personal experience I would like to write about why I would like to become a nurse and what motivated me to make this life changing decision. For the ethnography I have considered interviewing a hospice nurse. I am curious to hear about some of the challenges they face and emotion that goes into the job. As for the argument portion I have considered writing about the rise in health costs. I don’t have much of an understanding of this matter, but it is something that I would like to learn more about.

Two other themes I have considered writing about are education and food. There are many different ideas I have debated with in both topics. Education, I could write about my personal experience at BCC. For the ethnography I could observe an elementary school classroom. For the argument I could write about how extra curricular activities have been eliminated due to budget cuts.  For food I could write about my own personal diet and the effects it has on my health. For the ethnography I could interview a dietician. For the argument I could write about the rise of obesity. 

Writer's Autobiography

I would like to think of myself as a nonfictional writer. I haven’t done much writing since I was in high school, about eight years ago. In high school, I enjoyed writing about real life issues. I took journalism my junior year; it was a challenge at first. It is a different approach to writing that I was not used to. But, I did enjoy writing about the latest news at “Westport High School”.  These days my writing is limited to text messages and emails to family and friends, thanks to the wonderful world of technology.

Growing up I wasn’t much of a reader, but when I became an adult I grew to love it. I read both fictional and nonfictional novels.  I become so engrossed in reading I tend to finish it in a short period of time (sometimes in one day). I would much rather read a book then watch a movie. I often get disappointed after watching a movie that was based on a novel I’ve read.

 I have to say this will be the first time I do all of my writing on screen. I have always written on lined paper and in pencil, I tend to make many errors. This will be a new experience for me, but I am looking forward to a little change.

            I hope for this semester that I can improve my writing. One of my weaknesses is getting started. I can look at a blank page for hours not knowing where to begin. I hope eventually writing will become easier for me.
